About the Art - Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre

To the Mowanjum people, the Wandjina is the supreme spirit being and they have been painting Wandjina figures in rock art sites of the western Kimberley for thousands of years. The Wandjina's have large eyes but no mouth because it's said their power is such that they don't need to speak.

Mowanjum people continue to paint the Wandjina image, reinterpreting this astonishing tradition through contemporary practice and mediums.

Experience the vitality of the Wandjina tradition and learn the stories that have been passed on for more than 100 centuries. Appearing from the air as a giant Wandjina, the Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre features an art gallery, artist's studio, museum and theatrette which educates audiences about the culture of the Mowanjum people.
